This is an exciting time for business and education in Newcastle, with many organisations supporting the future North East workforce by piloting the new 14-19 Diplomas.
Young people in Newcastle are among the first in the country to study for the new Diplomas, which will bridge the gap between theoretical and practical learning.
Over 80 local and national businesses were represented at a
breakfast meeting at St James’ Park recently in a drive to increase
employer involvement and 25 companies including BAE Systems and Ryder Architecture have already pledged their support.
Newcastle EBP will co-ordinate employer involvement when the first Diplomas are introduced to Newcastle schools in September, providing new opportunities for businesses of all sizes to influence skills in the future workforce, develop recruitment channels, contribute to the local economy, and enhance their image and reputation.
“Employers need literate, numerate young people with a positive attitude who are able to communicate effectively, work in teams and have good business awareness.
“The new Diplomas, designed with these needs in mind, should
ensure young people develop vital literacy, numeracy and
employability skills and apply them in real-life situations to help them see the relevance for their future working lives. Diplomas will also provide students with a valuable understanding about the ways particular sectors operate.”
Richard Lambert, Director General of the CBI

There are a variety of ways for employers to get involved, including setting business challenges for students and hosting pupils on work place visits.

The Diplomas will combine skills development and education, developing maths, English and ICT competence in addition to
employability, thinking and vocational skills. Practical, work-related learning is at the heart of the qualifications and students will complete an extended project, specialist learning and at least ten days experience of the work place.

Newcastle is one of only 10 local authorities nationally to gain approval to pilot all five initial Diplomas: Construction and the Built Environment, Engineering, Society, Health and Development, Creative and Media, and Information Technology.
More than 5,000 employers have been involved in the development of the Diplomas, ensuring the qualifications will equip students with the attributes and skills necessary to progress successfully into employment or university.
